I have a Farmall C tractor, I was wondering what hydraulic oil to use in the system? How much hydraulic oil dose it take?

Back in the 40's, they probably recommended 20 weight non-detergent oil for the hydraulic system. Today any good quality hydraulic fluid is acceptable. The determining factor is that you don't want to cross contaminate the fluid from your system to someone else's equipment, but of course that isn't a problem with a C.

Conventional wisdom is to use the most expensive available just for the warm fuzzy feeling that it gives you. Modern tractors need it due to the clutch packs and wet brakes. Your C has dry brakes and clutch so it doesn't need oil with the friction modifiers and other additives. Not only does the C not need the expensive oil it is actually most likely bad for it. Most Cs these days are in retirement and don't work very hard very often The additives in Hytran oil cause the oil to absorb moisture out of the air. There is a post here pretty much every week from a tractor owner asking about his hydraulic oil that is milky like a "coffee milk shake". He is advised to change it because it has absorbed water and will not lubricate and will cause parts to rust. If you will be using the C hard enough to get the oil hot enough to drive the moisture out at least once a month, you will minimize the damage. If you use cheap old oil like what came in it, the moisture will not mix in and will be under the oil where you can drain it off periodically, by just loosening the drain plug until clean oil runs out. Extra money for problems or save your money and be good to your C.

I have a 1950 Farmall C the manual I have recommended 10 weight non detergent for the hydraulic system

I go with what is recommended above ,use hytran for best performance. I ve looked long time for 10 wt for 560 pto cant find it. Used hytran recommended replacement alternative in manual .
