My friend has a cub and would like to know about the cooling system. What type of coolant? Is there a thermostat in system? How to check the coolant level? al71

The system is simple. it is thermosiphon. No water pump, no thermostat, nothing but a radiator and fan. The heat of the engine causes the coolant to heat. this heat decreases its density inside the block. Cooler coolant in the radiator moves into the bottom of the block because it is heavier, Thus hot coolant travels to the radiator, the fan draws air through it, and it is cooled reintering the block. the warmer it gets the faster it flows. 50-50 anti freeze for coolant if you overfil it will go out the overflow and be fine no thermostat sounds like your fiend needs to learn a bunch about his new tractor. He needs to get an owners manual amd read careful those are a very simple machine but do need good maintence.

Yup, good old green glycol antifreeze is the right stuff to use.

On a Cub you only fill until the fins in the radiator are covered with coolant. You need to leave room for expansion. Many a Cub owner has panicked when their tractor started spewing coolant on the ground because they overfilled the radiator.

If you shine a light down in at an angle you can see the fins.
