Farmall F12

I dont have any pics of a starter at all, but heres a pic of the generator I added to my F-23 to run lights. Its just an old Delco off a 1930s car. I made a bracket that is made of flat steel and angle iron, it mounts on the bolts for the water elbow. Than there is a piece of flat stock that is hollow in the center so it can be moved back and forth to line up the belt.

Andy,thanks for the picture,do you know what # generator it is,what is the diameter of the pulley,this would be a great help.

Does anybody have hard evidence that IHC actually offered electric-start options on the late F-series? I have seen a few, and the installations look great (bell housings and all), but I have not seen these listed anywhere as IHC parts. There were lots of people supplying aftermarket parts to make these somewhat-crude beasts more modern--I have three or four catalogs from the 30s and 40s offering seats, variable governors, new manifolds, road gears and the like. I would be delighted if somebody has the info on original IHC electrical equipment. I'm sitting here looking at (I'm guessing by the contents) 1938 brochure for F-20/F-30, and the only electrical equipment mentioned is a no-battery outfit for lights--the generator mounts between mag and governor. This is not to say that starters weren't offered in, say 1939 or even into 1940, when, "they" say,
F-20s were made as long as parts were available, even after the start of H and M production.

Some side palaver: Why would anybody want an F-20 when he could get a beautiful, comfortable new H? Well, I remember conversations between farmers about that time; they said that a rubber-tired F-20 would run rings around an H. I spent a lot of time on both, and I tend to agree. My father had 2 H's, including one with hi-compression gas engine, and you could not get it to plow in third gear at full engine speed. An
F-20 on 36" rubber would plow through thick and thin in second gear (about 4 mph) and sometimes in third (well over 4 mph). The difference is in the size of the engine, and the resulting torque. The F-20 was designed to produce enough horsepower to make up for all the losses through steel wheels--AND it was designed with two so-called "plowing speeds"--2.75 and 3.25 mph on steel (these speeds go up quite a bit when 36" rims plus tires replace the original 40" steel wheels). It looks as if the H was designed FOR rubber tires, and to have enough moxie to pull 2 plows at a "plowing speed" just over 3 mph. It produces enough horsepower for this, but not to do this much work in third unless the soil is very light. Incidentally, I have a report of a plowing test at a state university in 1920, and it shows very clearly that plow draft goes UP dramatically as the speed increases. It looks as if most of the tractors around 1920 were designed to plow at 3 mph or less. The draft goes down quite a bit, of course, as ground speeds go down. This probably explains why the Titan 10-20 was often shown pulling 3 plow bottoms, very slowly no doubt. The McCormick-Deering 10-20 which replaced the Titan would pull only 2 plow bottoms, at around 3.25 mph--this with steel on the tractor. I used to try to plow in third with my father's 10-20, but all you got was a lot of lugging with the engine running at about half speed. Too much power wasted through the lugs.
