Farmall F20

Had my F20 running just last night. I took the carb off to replace the gasket between the manifold and carb. Got that buttoned back up and made a minor adjustment to the governor. Didnt mess with anything else. Now it won't start. It'll fire a couple times (enough to produce a little exhaust) then it dies almost immediately. Any ideas? Thanks.

May be that new gasket did not seal and you have a vacuum leak?
or you turned the carb upside down and stirred up some Sediment in carb bowl? How about throttle linkage not connected right?

Make sure the gasket is sealed. If the flange on the carb or manifold, or both are not flat, the new gasket could be worse than the original. Sloshing the carb around can stir up crud from the bottom of the bowl, making simple into difficult. Jim

All depends what this minor governor adjustment was. Maybe the carb butterfly is staying closed.

Well I disconnected the throttle linkage. Made sure it was going to mesh and hooked it back up. Started up on the 2nd crank, but now the tractor won't idle down. Seems to be running full bore even with the throttle at idle. Mine is a 38 with the factory variable speed governor. I assume the weights should be able to open at idle and should be pushed shut at full throttle, is this correct? Thanks.

No,...the weights are closed at idle or slow rpm, as the speed increases the weight fly outward opening the throttle.

also if the engine is stopped then when throttle is advanced it should open the butterfly. it should be doing that. plus the springs are holding the weights in also. when running the governor is actually pulling the throttle to the closed side. the springs are acting against the weights.

Sounds to me like the governor linkage to carburetor throttle shaft is not in alignment. It is being held wide open because the tab on the linkage isn't in alignment.

So I took a look at the governor, and when it is throttled down with the butterfly closed, the governor thrust mechanism is allowing the weights to fly open. And when the tractor is at full throttle, the thrust is pushed all the way back holding the weights from opening. So I'm not sure why it is the opposite of what it should be.

I agree with Ken, that's what makes the most sense to me.
