Farmall H 1945

I have a 1945 Farmall H with a loader on it. When I try to stack large hay bales two high. when I first start it will lift the bales, but after the oil gets warm it will no longer lift them. Is there a way to correct this problem. How about thicker hydraulic oil ? any other ideas will be very much appreciated. thank you in advance.

Sounds like a worn pump if it is ok when cold. What pump are you using? Belly pump or pto pump? If using the belly pump they are pretty low pressure to start with. Any water contamination or aeration of the hydraulic fluid? Thicker fluid might help depending on what is in there now. Also might help to know what brand/type of loader it is. Lots of variables.

The original hydraulic pump in the H was designed to use 30W oil, if that's the pump you are using.

They are supposed to run on 30 wt, non detergent oil. I put hydraulic oil in my 43 H one time and did a lot of plowing with a hydraulic lift plow. Oil eventually got hot and would lift the plow. If you aren't sharing newer hydraulic lift implements I would put the 30wt oil into it. Takes 6 quarts. I had a mechanic tell me one time when my hydraulic unit on my M was a bit weak to put 40 wt oil into it.

I would try anti foaming AW42 in it.

Many years ago in the 70's I was driving a country back road south of Hodgenville, Ky. and passed a Farmall M pulling a wheel disc. It was stopped along the road and the farmer was trying to get it to lift. I stopped to help and asked him what fluid he had in the hydraulic belly pump. Hydraulic oil. I asked him if he would trust me and he said yes, so I suggested that we go back to a gas station and buy 6 quarts of non detergent 30 wt. We drained and re filled and it then lifted fine. Ellis
