Farmall h 6 volt

Gents,

Help me out here. I have an h with positive ground 6 volt and generator and mag.

Can't I replace the battery, starter, and genny, with 12 volt and do nothing to the mag?

Thanks

The mag and the starter are both fine at either voltage. The battery and generator system need to be replaced, as do any light bulbs. If you go from + to - ground you will need to swap the leads on the ammeter or it read backwards. You can put a Delco 10SI alternator on an H and fit it under the hood but it is a little tight. There is a Hitachi alternator that is recommended by Janicholson but I can't think of the number.

If you use a 12 generator and regulator rather that an alternator every thing looks original, uses the same belt and mounts. Just my preference. I always thought an alternator looks like a cobble job.

Yes you can. the Hitachi alternator fits real nice on there. Charlies Repair in Austin MN sells a real nice mounting kit.

The Hitachi 14231 12 volt alternator fits nicely on a Farmall H. Turn the generator bracket upside down and use the same belt and still have some adjustment left.
Most H's work fine on 6 volt with 00 cable size and soldered terminals with the ground cable attached to one of the starter to frame mounting bolts if you want to keep the original system, Hal.
