Farmall H Magneto

I am working on getting a spark out of my Magneto for an H, but I am having a few problems. When I just put the wire coming out of the top
cap of the distributor on a plug it has a great blue spark, but when I put the wire into the distributor cap, I can't seem to get any spark
at all. The rotor is brand new, and I used a cap that I know is good to test it. Would anyone have any ideas as to where I am going wrong?

Is the distributor cap bright and shiny down inside of the coil wire tower?

Do you mean top cap as coming out of coil to dis. cap? If so you have a problem with distributor cap or rotor.

The cap that I used to test it was off of a well running tractor, so I don't really see how it could be the cap. The rotor is also brand new.

With the way stuff is made today the new rotor could be bad.

The gears driving the rotor must be out of time. Time the odd tooth on the small gear to the C (clockwise) on the big gear.
