Farmall H Oil Filter

My Oil Filter leaks oil. I tighten the top bolt and after riding for about 15 minuets, the bolt gets loose and oil leaks out the top and bottom. I checked to make sure there is only one gasket and there is just one. Should I just tighten it more? I would hate to strip it. I am wondering if anybody else had a solution to keep it tight during the vibration of ride the tractor?
Thanks Kevin

did you dig out the old hard gasket in the groove when you changed the filter? Rubber gasket gets hard as a rock. It needs to be dug out with an icepick,or similar. I think there is a copper 'gasket' on the top.

If that leaks out the bottom oil seal, with just one O ring in there, never heard of that, you sure there isn't a bit of something in there ? The top looks like the brass ring is missing, just measure the bolt, you can buy new ones of those ! You can put a 3 inch piece of pipe, in the drain, so it doesn't run on, and behind that channel iron !

As stated, there is rubber o ring and copper gasket on top, would expect that old o ring is stuck in bottom, get a new copper gasket too.

I agree with the replies. You need to make sure all traces of the old rubber seal have been removed. I put a piece of cloth in the filter base to stop bits of rubber going in and then clean out with a small screwdriver.
Do NOT overtighten the bolt when you refit. Many moons ago, a boy was helping his Dad by changing the oil filter on a Farmall M. The bolt does not strip, but the filter housing does deform and leak large quantities around the copper washer best not to ask how I know this.

the bolt cant get loose by itself. you are not tightening it enough. I hardly think you will strip a bolt like that. its a good pull with a 7/8 wrench.

Take the canister and filter off. Now get a goodlite and see that the old rubber o-ring is bad. You will need a sharp object to dig it out and it will not be easy. When it is all gone you will see the metal place where a new one will fit. You will have fun digging the old one out but it has to go.

here is one nobody will believe. In the 1970's dad was having trouble with his filter leaking on his 560. he removed the o ring and tightened it up with out it. it never leaked. I still remember him saying I through that dam o ring out. It was steel on steel.

SURE I believe he took an O-ring out.

But there was still one more underneath it! And it must have been in reasonably good condition!

Those darned grooves are DEEPER than most "mechanics" realize!

The canister in the picture appears to be in good shape, but I had one that insisted in leaking at the top. Close examination revealed that a previous owner had over-tightened that bolt, repeatedly, and had severely deformed the top of that canister. No way to repair it. I found another canister.

your joking?I cant see that working either . soon as you put a wrench to that nut it will push that rubber right out. plus that rubber is not oil resistant.as I said it takes a good snug on that nut , not hand tight. u need the actual sealing washer there, not a tube rubber as it will be leaking soon as the oil hits it. good way to loose an engine. show a picture of that setup.

Nope, works good. Just lube it as you do an oil filter. Turns with the bolt then. Still has the brass washer. The top of my canister must been smashed alittle. I am not computer savvy enough to do it on here, but would certainly text you a picture. Did it years ago. Bone dry

I should have been more clear. The picture was before I rode for 15 minutes. I should have taken it after I rode. It leaks from the Top, not the bottom. I think the copper wash it missing. I will order one and hope that stop the leak. Thanks for all the replies.

The filter housing on my Farmall M was that way. I straighten it out the best I could and then brazed a heavy washer to the top.
I then took it to a machine shop and had them turn it true.
Doesn't leak any more.

i think theres still a o ring in that groove...id double check it....my 1st time that happened...i swore that was steel i was digging in...it was even silver lookin...then i got mad an drove a pic down in it and pryed out a 20 yr. old oring, just a piece of it........you guys told me there was one in it...........thnks dewy
