Hello....

My wife inherited her Father's 1948 H. I was wanting to change the oil and gear oil. Could I please have a recommendation on viscosity, brand, etc.? My apologies in advance if I am doing something wrong. This is my first time posting on here.

Thank you in advance.....

Todd,
Welcome to Yesterdays Tractors!! There are a lot of great experts here to help you, I am sure you will find it interesting and helpful.

Old tractors really are not that picky about oils, however it is a good practice to run heavier oils if your weather permits. Many of these old tractors are worn and the heavier oils can help with oil PSI. I use 15W40 as my engine oil and 80/90 for gear oils. Not a bad idea to buy 5 gallon pails and keep them for future oil changes.
Best of luck.

Depending on how many of these old tractors and engines you have you might want to look at barrels of oil for the engines. Cheaper in that quantity, though not if only a couple engines. Sinkhole has the viscosity right on the oils and if it has a belly pump don't forget that and I would just use the cheapest hydraulic oil found for it if not sharing oils. If sharing (other tractors) then use the hytran oil for it.

You will need to get a bit creative with the fill plug on the transmission oil. It takes a big square tool. Guy at work made one for my W-4 by welding a square chunk on the end of a bent piece of metal for the handle. He said he made one like that for his H - so I assume they are the same. Might be a 3/4 drive socket breaker I suppose - I don't have anything bigger than 1/2.

Old gear oil is a sludge in the bottom differential case. Very hard to drain it out. ,might take a day or two. Ive used a homemade tool to try and get it drain . Or used five gallons of kerosene to flush out after I drove it around awhile. Take your time . It will eventually drain out.
Also use a magnet with flexible tip to collect all kinds of odd things that may have been left in there at factory like wire and pins for example Ive found .Now a magnet wont work on a coke bottle so ,thats a rare find you dont , i think have to worry about my friend found that in his tractor , was telling him what I found in mine. Youll hear it with new oil.
Done four tractors found something foreign in three

First thing you should do is buy an operators manual or owners manual, lots of good info in there. Your new oil filter should come with an O ring that goes between the filter canister and the base. There WILL be an old one in the groove in the base that can be VERY hard to get out. Use a pick or sharpened nail to dig the old one out and then clean that groove out and put the new O ring in. Remember your manual will have been written in the 1940's so some info is out of date as in you should use modern multi weight oil and permanent antifreeze etc. You put engine oil in until it starts to come out the top petcock on the side of the oil pan. Also change the oil in the base of the air cleaner. There should be a mark on the side of that oil cup to show the correct level. Typing this I realize how much there is to know and how much you really need a manual. You can probably buy one from this web site or others.
