Farmall H throttle problem

Farmall H throttle gets more resistance when pulling to full throttle. Has a new sawtooth lever assembly. While driving, the throttle will drop back 3 or 4 notches. The linkage going to the governor is all in good condition.Would this problem be in the governor or possibly just the linkage adjusted too tight?

That seems to be the nature of the beast. Mine has an M&W friction throttle, and the governor will pull it down sometimes. I'd make sure the linkage wasn't too tight, and you might also remove the paint from the teeth to help keep it from slipping down.

If you move the throttle back one tooth does the engine slow down? On the front end of the rod under the hood there are two springs 18 on either side of pivot 19. See link upper right box.

If you are completely collapsing the back spring it is adjusted to tight and putting to much pressure on the linkage down to the governor and inside it on the stop. Adjust the nuts so the spring is not being completely collapsed but almost. If need be use a knife file or the edge of a thin half round file a create a larger more positive notch for engagement at full throttle.

Another issue is the condition of the Pawl (notch in the lever that engages the saw teeth) if it is dull or rounded it will slip out. The spring used to hold the lever up could also be weal/rusty. Dont drag the lever on the teeth when pulling it back! Jim

To make the toothed throttle control work better, a non-factory booster spring can be attached to the linkage so that it pulls the linkage at full throttle, yet weak enough to allow the linkage to be moved to idle speed. Get a medium heavy spring (heavier than a screen door spring, lighter than a brake shoe spring) about twice as long as the throw of the lever. Wire it to one of the manifold bolts for easy adjustment…. Then when you get it to where it works you can make a nice bracket to mount permanently.

Thanks for the tips. I'll check the adjustment on springs. I tried adding a washer under the spring on the new sawtooth throttle. That helped some. I'll update when I get it fixed
