hey, I have a 39 i think farmall H. But i am having a problem with it.. whenever i try to start it, it rolls over once and then stops.. and then i let off on the starter button and then it hisses as of it lets all the pressure off.. and i keep doing this over and over and eventualy the battery goes low.. what could this problem be and how could i fix this? it use to do this before when i had the old manifold on there which was cracked and had many holes in it but eventualy it would start on like the fourth push or so.. but once i put the new manifold on there it kept getting harder and harder and now this.. it doesnt even roll over multipule times and of course dosnt start.. if someone could help that would be great! thank you

I would start with checking battery cables and connections. The next item will be the push button. Then starter brushes. Things you can inspect. The start button is under 20 bucks.

I would agree with the with connections as well but the hiss makes me think that you have a stuck valve maybe. Of course it would still run with a closed valve if the rest are open. I would take the valve cover off either way and check

The battery cables need to be 0gauge or 00gauge wire, it probably has automotive #4 wire on it for cables. The battery is probably also at fault. Fully charge it, Put fresh heavy cables on it, and it will crank well. The manifold is not to blame. If it is in time, it will start.
THe hissing is from the compression stroke going up, but not getting past TDC. This lets the compressed mixture squeeze out (normal in any engine stopped at or near TDC on compression. Jim

great new guys!! was out today and stopped at a shop and asked for some 0 - 00 wire and he brought me over and showed me and helped me pick out what i needed and then when i got about half way home i noticed that they were 4 gauge!! took them back and said hey i said i needed 0s so the guy went in back and got me some 1s (which was all they had) got home.. and fired right up! still sounds iffy on the running but i think its usable.. it sounds almost like its skipping a little bit.. or it runs and then sounds like it slows down for a split second.. than goes right back up!! thanks guys... starts right up on the first press.. =)

I have been there many times when people replace factory cables with 4# test fishing line.
Amps make the difference.
Adjusting the timing, and Carb settings will make it smooth. It must have advance (timing light and instructions needed) They will miss a little, causing the rain cap to bounce. If more dramatic, tune it up. Jim
