Hi, How do I replace the hand start shaft on my H. It snapped off today. It looks like I have to pull the front end off the side rails?

I would see if I could drill the shaft for another cross pin a little further back and if so saw the end off smooth. Otherwise weld a short section onto the shaft and spend some time grinding. Otherwise, you will have to take the front end off to get the complete unit out.

If you want it done right the boster has to come off.mine was so mess up and lock-up I removed it completely.my crank had a coupler bolted to it then end to what you have broken was trimed and pinned with a 1/4"gr.8 bolt.then the coupler was knotted to slide around the harden bolt.looks tacky but works. good luck may require two people.I will never do it alone again. John

That is one serious arm you have on you!
I would get a piece of heavy walled pipe to fit the remaining bent piece. Then I would heat the bent end red, and then (with the pipe) push it back into the bolster and bend it straight.
Once straight, I would taper the end with a grinder for about 1/4" at 45*. The next step would be to purchase a 5" grade5 bolt of the same diameter. Cut the shank out of the bolt. Taper the end of it as well to match the snout in the tractor. V a hard wood chunk about 4 inches long with a 3/4 inch wide groove at 90*.
Clamp the bolt stub to the snout with C clamps and tack weld it using E7018 rod at about 120 amps DCSP. Tack no more than a root pass of about 1/4" long. Let it cool. Re-position the block and clamps and weld the other side. as before. Place
the block again and continue this process until it is at the surface. Ground this setup only through the shaft, not the tractor casting.
Draw file the weld, or carefully grind it to smooth. Drill the hole in the new shank and cut to length. Round the edges to prevent Kidney removal when walking past. Bruising a kidney is bad enough. Jim

I am with Jim on this one.

What you have left there is TOTALLY repairable.

I would not hesitate to weld up the end of that shaft and put in a new pin to fit the hand crank.

Repeating what Jim said,DO NOT ground the welder thru ANYTHING but the tip of the shaft !!! (Or ,what you are welding to the tip.)If you ground thru the chassis,or anything else, you will arc across the bore of that cranking stub and COULD freeze it up or gald it where it wont spin freely in it's bore!!!!
