Im getting ready to remove the motor from my 39 H.Does the bolts that hold the frame rails also serve as the bolts that hold the motor in place, and is there any hidden bolts such as behind the starter,Does anyone know how many total bolts there is that holds the motor to the flywheel housing. There is also threaded studs are they just for lining up

The 39 has different engine mounts than the later tractors, but I believe the engine will come out without removing the frame rails once the tractor is split. There is probably a bolt inside the starter housing. You can count the other bolts, they are all visible--don't forget the smaller ones on the top of the clutch housing. The studs are to help guide the engine in. They do not need to be removed.

I am thinking there is a hidden bolt behind the starter. I would pull the threaded pins first. Just put a nut on them and crank until they come out. I have not had good luck splitting without pulling pins first.

I was thinking there were some bolts inside the bell houseing, besides the one under the starter, that held the backer plate on the rear of the block.. and that plate is also held by the bolts that go into the rails... necessitating the removal of the rails unless you can access them from under the torque tube... Am I remembering incorrectly?

I know there is at least on bolt behind the starter. I think another two from the bell housing side as I recall.

The FRONT mounts MIGHT be different on a '39, but everything else is the same, and those front mounts will never slide out of the frame rails without at least loosening the bolts, and if you loosen the bolts, you may as well just remove the frame rails entirely.

I have split a Super H and a Super M, there were no hidden bolts. I pulled the engine out of the Super M after splitting without removing the rails. Since I have not split a 39 H I am not qualified to answer specifically, but I bet there is no difference.

I can't speak for a 39 H, but on my Super M I pulled the engine simply by removing the bolts from the mounts and lifting the engine out -- the rails remained intact and the mounts stayed in the rails. Perhaps there is a difference somewhere. I did not want to remove the rails because my engine splitter was bolted to them.
