Farmall m 12 volt generator

My M is 6 volt and I would like to convert it to 12 volt to have my local generator shop redo it again it’s 400 there’s a tractor swap meet coming up and I would like to find a 12 volt generator for it to just swap it my question is what model of generator do I need and how do I know it’s 12 volt

A 12 volt Delco generator has a red tag. I know there are individual opinions on this but is your tractor meticulously restored to near show room condition? If not I would strongly recommend installing an alternator. You can remove the regulator and put a machine screw through a couple of eyelets on the wires at the regulator connections and use the original wiring to the generator. The lower generator bracket is flipped upside down and then the alternator is mounted and aligned for the belt easily. All you need is a slotted upper adjustment bracket.
My point about the wires at the regulator would allow you to easily return it to the generator and regulator should you want to in the future.

Also, a "mini alternator" or "racing alternator" is lot easier to tuck under the hood than a full-size Delco 10SI (as many folks use).

Back in the day dad went to the junkyard and bought a 12 v generator with the regulator for a Chevy . Looks factory (almost) and works good

I would like to keep it a generator although it’s not restored I just want to be able to take it places and not be afraid that the tractor will not start I only get about 6-7 cranks and the battery goes dead I have high compression pistons in it

Delco 10SI alternators are the answer. The standard "three wire" is easy and starts charging immediately. A Hitachi 14231is smaller and is just fine. Generators will not give you that reliability factor. These have a regulator built in, so one wire to the ammeter, one short wire at the alternator, and one wire to the ignition key. (the last wire needs a dash light bulb (not LED) in series with it. Big terminal to the ammeter, #1 spade terminal to the ignition at the key with bulb in series, and a 6 inch piece from #2 to the Big output terminal mentioned above. The spade terminals can be 12 gauge, the one to the ammeter should be 10 gauge. Jim In a Hitachi alternator the #1 terminal = L and the #2 terminal = S Jim
