Farmall M Belly Pump Test

Ok, I'd like to test the belly pump on my M, but I have no implements or hydraulic cylinders...So?

If I fill it up with SAE 30 and actuate the lever, with everything plugged....and the engine boggs......does this mean that its working? or Should I just leave it alone until I get an implement to test it?

My dilema is that I don't want to invest in a three point hitch, if I dont have funtctioning hydraulics..

Next assuming that it doesnt work, am I better off fixing it, or going to a completely different system;

Laslty, any idea where to get parts for the belly pump?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm embarrasingly new. Thanks for your help!

you could fill it and see if it will stall, there is a relief valve in the pump that will kick out and bleed off excess pressure. if you have access to a hydraulic pressure gauge you could connect it to one of the output lines and check it that way. if the pump is shot, you can pick up a used one reasonable.

One thing to check right off the bat is to make sure the handle has good "snap". They have a bad habbit of breaking the spring that returns the lever to center. Mine had broken before I got it, sucked the broken part up into the pump, and wrecked the pump. Like you I didn't have any way to test it till I brought my new sickle mower home, and then, NOTHIN. Course then I was in a big hurry to get runnin, so I had to fork out $200+shipping from a wrecker that would guarantee it. If you can be a little patient, You should be able to find one for $50.

The method you describe will let you know if it is at all functional, but not to what extent. Just do it. Dead heading it for 10 seconds hurts nothing. It will just make the tractor engine sound a little different, and some whine from the pump. JimN

Something that has not been mentioned here is to fill it the proper amount, If it were me I would pull the drain plug and see what comes out, oil contaminated, no oil, filings,do you see where I am going here.
