FARMALL M STARTER PROBLEM

STARTED UP ON THE TRAILER , BACKED IT OFF , SHUT IT OFF , CAME BACK 5 MINUTES LATER AND WENT TO START IT AND CLICK , CLICK . CHECKED THE BATTERY , ITS FINE ( NEW ON 11/24/06 ) PUT A NEW STARTER SOLENOID ON IT AND TRIED AGAIN - CLICK , CLICK , PUT THE CHARGER ON IT AND TRIED IT AGAIN AND IT GOES DOWN TO 15 WHILE YOU TRY TO START IT, TOOK BATTERY BACK OUT & HAD IT TESTED - CAME BACK FINE , I TOOK OUT THE STARTER AND TRIED IT ON THE BENCH AND IT WORKED FINE - DID HAVE A SLIGHT BURNT SMELL AND SPRING SEEMS TO BE DEAD - YOU HAVE TO PUSH THE STARTER DRIVE BACK WITH YOUR FINGERS - SO ? WHAT DOES EVERYONE THINK ?

Setting a starter on a bench and check it does little or nothing to tell the whole story. Take it to an auto parts store most will test them for fre. The machine they use tells the whole story as in amp draw etc. And also the bendex will not go back on its own when the engine starts that is what kicks the bendex back to the home position

I'm not a redpower guy..( I do own a cub though! ) however many starters retract after being thrown out from higher engine rpm.. etc.

Any chance that it was just hung up in gear?

You are not hydro locked are ya? ( fuel / fluid in cyl? ).. Can ya bar the engine over with the starter out? No? Remove spark plugs and try it..

It might need a new spring, or the starter on your M may have jammed, and when you took it off, you solved the problem - for now. It's not uncommon for them to lock. The usual quick and simple fix is to put the tractor in 5th gear (ignition off) and rock the tractor backwards until you see the fan blades move. Loosening the two starter bolts will also free it. Over time, it will likely get worse, and need a new gear on the end of the drive, or possibly a new ring gear on the flywheel.

You could have a bad spot on the starter motor, but I would also check all cable connections and do a voltage drop test on all starter cables.

Probly what is called a locked starter. Happened a lot with my grandfathers M. If you would have put it back without testing it would probly started. We always put it in road gear and rocked it backwards and it would let loose. It happens every now and then with my Oliver 77. Being old and not the bull I once was I now hook a chain on the drawbar and tug on it to rock the tractor with a different tractor while in road gear.

Very few if any starter springs will pull the drive back without turning it with your fingers.

well it bench test fine but i did take it to the local starter rebuild guy and told him to take it all apart and check it out , i don"t want to be in the middle of a antique tractor pull and have it act up .... better to be safe than sorry

My Oliver 77 didnt start locking up until I put in rebuilt starter with a new starter drive. It doesnt do it much but to totally stop it I would guess I would have to put in a new ring gear. Might be another washer at the end of the drive would stop the drive gear going in and locking to the ring gear. Starter shop did the rebuild for me on this one. The last time it locked up was on the trailer at a tractor pull. It was loaded on the dove tail and I put it in high reverse and had another puller hook on the front and shake it a coupla times and she let loose. Faster than taking the bolts out. Seen it happen to several pullers over the years. No problem for some but other get a shook up.

Dead sots on the armature are common. Worn brushes will do it.

had one doing that finaly took starter a part found it needed a set of brushesnot hard for a doityourselfer. regular deelco brushes.
