Farmall M ???

I bought a 1947 Farmall "M" and I have a few questions.

1. It has an M&W 9-speed. Does it hurt anything to leave it in the high side all the time? It is handy as all get out, high second and third are good running around gears

2. It has an aftermarket (I assume) seat cylinder. Is there any way to adjust the cylinder? I weigh 220, and I have to push the seat down by pushing on the steering wheel, it stays down while I'm on it, but it's a little stiffer than I like.

3. The gearshift is bent differently than any M I was ever on......it looks factory, and does make it easier to shift (the lever seems flatter on top).

That may not be the right shock on the back of your seat. At least, it looks like it would be easier to put the wrong shock in that setup vs the smaller one on the other seats. So, that's what I would swap out first. The gear shifter reminds me of the funky looking one on the tractors set up for mounted cotton pickers/harvesters. Not sure about the 9 speed other than, those gears are there to use. I'd wager you can use them for tooling about & do know it would be nice to have one on my H for raking.

That shock is just wrong. The correct one is shorter, and has very much different valving that allows humans to make it move, not the weight of a car/truck! Correct does not mean just shorter. The shifter on Ms is bent from the factory. It looks like it might be a tiny bit shorter than my memory serves, but it is OK. Farmall shift knobs are not the best solution. I use JB Weld to glue them on straight. The 9 speed is a set of gears that are just as strong as the standard gears, so use them as needed. do not use the PTO when the 9 speed is in use!!!! The PTO is transmission driven and will be way too fast for the tools designed for 540 RPM. Jim
