I've been pushing it off. I know it is pretty involved. I have
to rebuild the carb and put a new head gasket on. Any tips (good
head gasket, good carb kit, int./exh. gasket and price)?
I'm no stranger to wrenching, been doing it all my life. It just looks like
a pain with linkages. Where can I find torque specs and valve adj. specs?
My dad has shop manuals but they are kind of scattered all over, and
I can't seem to find the MD manual, Murphy's law of course.

Thanks for any input.

Hello, best place to find the parts is the case IH dealer. They are expensive so be prepared to spend some money. There really is not anything to the carb to rebuild it. The head gasket not hard to do either. Sometimes getting the linkages to line back up and working can take a little time and messing with it. I don't have my manual with me right now but, you should get a good service manual to do the job. The best would be an actual IH manual it will have the best information in it. Don't sweat it. Have fun with it. It's not hard just takes time. If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Nothing to the carb, just clean it good and reassemble with new gaskets. I believe they are like $15 for the set. The head gasket is a bit more in depth, best place to get gasket set is from weber tractor parts. When purchasing head gasket set you must know what size and style of sleeves are in the engine to get the proper head gasket. If the wrong gasket is installed there is a 99% chance you will seriously damage the engine. Head gasket set runs about $250 and includes the manifold gaskets ect. The easiest shop manual to use is the IT Service Manual you will need manual #8. All the linkage is set to spec and MUST be in spec for engine to start/run/switch over properly. Torque spec on the head is 110ft lbs. Valves are .017 warm. Set them at .019 intake and .020 exhaust cold then recheck when warm they should be very close. These aren't very complicated engines if you take you time and follow the procedures in the manual and don't skip steps. Jim.

Got all my gaskets from case/ih when I did my smd. Kinda spendy, but what isn't on that engine. Not that hard of a job, but that head is heavy.
