farmall regular hard to start

I have a farmall regular that is hard to start. put on a newly rebuilt mag, timed to fire at tdc.Crank it, and it will just fire a few times but will not keep running. I pull it 10 feet and it starts right up.What is wrong? Thank-you

When it runs, does it run good and smooth?? No missing, spuddering, or otherwise don't sound like it is running quite right? Rich or lean fuel?

A hand cranker really needs to be up in shape in all aspects. And kept tuned up and what not. Not just a good mag. Any ailment, can make hand crank starting difficult. Dead cylinder, carb not set right, and so on.
It can have an ailment like that, and run if pull started, but be near impossible to hand crank start.

It's kind of hard to tell. You say you got a good rebuilt mag. If that's good, stands to reason it's something else.

Really, any hand cranker needs to run pretty good to be hand cranked. Not just kind of runs. Kind of runs, is REALLY not good enough for hand crank starting. And, (but I can pull start it) really doesn't tell you much. Only that it does run. That does not in any way mean that it runs good, and is an easy starter. And that's what it needs to be for hand cranking.

I'd get it running (pull start it). And adjust the carb as best as you possibly can for starters. If it's a little rich or lean, can make a difference on how it starts (with hand crank).

Another thing I'd do, is try hand crank starting it right after you shut it off, versus trying it when it hasn't run for awhile (cold start). If there is a difference, that might tell you something. I've seen hand crankers that are hard to start when cold, but one pull of the crank when it is warm and just been shut off, and they'll fire over and run. Again, that indicates an ailment other than the mag.

My W30 is hard to start because it is worn out. I know timing is dead on. I installed new rings but the cylinders are tapered along with excessive clearance between piston/cylinders. Dont use graphite plug wires either.
