My 1953 Farmall Super M clutch is getting weak. Trying to get a load moving in 3rd is difficult and just yesterday the clutch didn't get the load moving and the engine didn't stall.
To me, even starting in 3rd gear, the clutch should be able to dog the motor down to stalling, or get the load moving. Since neither happened, I am thinking this clutch is getting weak.
I have replaced other clutches on my other tractors. When the adjustment gets pretty far out, I have replaced just the clutch disks and pilot bearing as it didn't wear all the way to the rivets yet and score the pressure plate or fly wheel. And I have been using those tractors for years like that with no sign of issue. Since its not making any noises, I am thinking I can save this pressure plate and no have to resurface the flywheel as I have done several times before.
Just as a side note, I am considering the cheapo path because we are in the process of buying and selling a house. So my tractor budget is at a minimum for the next couple months.
I am going to disassemble it first, then make a judgment from there.
My question is, the tractor has a J suffix and that's telling me it has a Rockford clutch. I don't know if that means its just a different clutch disk, or if the flywheel and pressure plate are different as well. I know its very possible it has a different clutch now, that's also why it needs to come apart before I order parts.
Any info on what is different about a Rockford clutch is appreciated.
