Farmall Super A

My daughter and I just bought a Super A in rough condition and finally got it running. I drive it around and there is a definite "growl" coming from the transmission when I drive it around. It's not too loud, but it is distinct. Is this normal for this model? This is our 5th tractor we have redone together, but the first Farmall.

there is a drain plug underneath the transmission. open it a bit (do not remove it)and let the water out. fill with 90 weight. there is a check plug on the left side of transmission. small square plug. fill until oil comes out check plug hole. this may help. also, fill final drive pans with 90 weight. there is only a fill plug on them.

get a owners manual as soon as possible.

Get a manual and check the fluids, but they can be noisy.

Yes they are known to be a bit on the loud side. But I would also make sure it is not full of water or water oil mix. I would slowly open up the transmission drain plug and as you do watch for water to start dripping out. If it does I would drain it and then fill it with say a 85W-140 gear old and that will help quit it down a bit

They are certainly growlers. You can't hear the gears at all in the bigger tractors. The A series had straight cut gears (if I remember right) and that makes for noise right out of the gate. If it doesn't sounds like tumbling rocks or grinding metal balls you are probably OK. I think mine is noisiest in third. I think they are all noisy, but I usually have the implement PTO turned off in that gear so there's no cover up. The Woods belly mower roars louder than first or second.

If you drain the transmission oil, doesn't take much to remove the shift lever top plate and inspect and feel for loose bearings. Biggest cost would be a cereal box for gasket paper and a little time. Put the shift lever in neutral before removal and make sure forks line up with proper positions on the gears when installing.

check the oil in the final drives,not uncommon to find one low as they rarely get checked, the left side seems the wear a little more and is usually where the noise is instead of the transmission as stated before if its just a whine and not knocking,popping and grinding it normal,what will help and is not a patch job with fresh 140 wt oil if you can find it not 80-140 wt in the transmission and final drives it will quieten down some, that wt oil doesn't work good in cold climates I have trouble finding straight 140 wt so I use 90 wt and add 4 bottles of stp to the transmission and 1 in each final drive
