Fast Idle - Deere 1020

1020 Gas (1966). Replaced carb with new TSX 904 (DOES NOT have load solenoid, just manual adjustment). When starting, rpm goes from 0 to 1,500 - 2,000 within about 10 seconds even with throttle fully closed. I then disconnected throttle rod to governor, idle screw was out 3 1/2 turns, turned all the way closed. Load screw was at 1/2 turn. Restarted and got same high rpm (closed load screw - had no effect) I had checked choke and throttle operation on new carb before installing. Thank you for your help!

When you tagged on to the another's thread, used red MN asked: "You say you checked the throttle operation. did you look if the throttle plate was setting centered in the bore allowing it to close completely?" Have you done that?

The load solenoid was there to shut the main jet down when the key was turned off, it was intended to reduce/stop run on of a hot engine at shutdown. I don't see it as a factor in your problem. I suspect an issue in the carb you installed as you said it previously idled with the old carb.

Is the idle speed screw on the side of the carb throttle shaft linkage backed off so it is not holding the throttle plate open some? This is not the idle air adjustment screw, on the top body under one of the mounting flange bolts/studs, I think you mentioned being out 3-1/2 turns.

Was the throttle/governor rod mounting on the carb the same ? Changed a 3020 from the POS MS carb to a zenith and had to adjust the linkage quite a bit to make it right.

Thanks for your reply. I will check the the shaft linkage. I am hoping to solve my problem without having to remove carb to reset throttle plate. will get back with my findings!

Thanks for your help! One turn change - so with engine off the rod is 1/8" too long to reach governor. New carb same as old TSX 904.

Went back and set idle at 600 RPM, removed side panel and the 7/8" throttle stop is correct, adjusted throttle rod from carb to gov to one turn short with gov pushed forward and rod pushed back to idle stop screw.

Starting and running engine, idle goes to 1,000 RPM. Will drop to 600 RPM if I push backward on the gov lever where rod attaches. Turned in idle jet screw until engine almost stopped and then backed it out a turn. Load screw (no solenoid) is set at 1/2 turn (TSX 904 carb, new received with that setting) Questions for the members: Do I

a) Lengthen throttle rod to carb?
b) Shorten/lengthen the long throttle rod that attaches below the gov?
c) Accept the 1000 RPM idle and move on?

As always I appreciate the help!

I would try and adjust the linkage from the gov to the carb. Shorter sounds right?
Per service manual it is set at one turn short. To move the idle speed down it would need to be made longer. I just wonder what would be the down side of going contrary to the service manual -don't want to mess up the new carb.

If you don't mind, please see my post on 4/2 above and commemt if you have any advice. Thanks!

When you say service manual is this John Deere publication SM2071? Or a different service manual?

Edited to remove stop settings question

Have you checked/adjusted the low and high idle stops for the throttle lever as described in the manual?
Sorry I missed that you have set the 7/8 dimension for the lever.

SM2071 I'm using. What high idle stop? I just checked the following: (engine off, cold), I advanced throttle and then closed it. I could still push the governor lever about 1/8" - 3/16" to the rear and the idle stop screw contacted the stop and I noticed the long throttle rod (the one below the carb) moved forward about an equal amount. There are adjustment nuts on the rear end of this rod that I could adjust to lengthen. Your thoughts please as this seems to be the same as lengthening the upper throttle rod a couple of turns thereby violating the "one turn short" per SM2071.
