Feeler gauge set

Went to check points & rocker arm gaps today. The feeler gauge set, that I found, has two numbers on each feeler and the end is ground some. like .018-.020. Does that indicate the tip is .018 ? What's the reason of this type gauge. Thanks
 
You are correct in your thinking, the end is the smaller number and everything else is the larger number. I do not know the specific reason for the design, but I have considered it a form of "idiot proofing" or to be more "PC" a way to be more efficient. For example if the gap required is 018", you set it to that using the tip and if you have the room you can slide it to where the size changes to 020" to verify your work. If the gauge stops at the transition the gap is correct, if it keeps going you need to set the gap tighter.
 
guess u have a go-no-go gauge. the reason is if your setting for .018 on the rockers, then .018 is a go, and .020 is a no-go. give a feeler gauge to different people and the experienced one will get it right. gotta have a feel for it.
 
Go/No Go feelers. You can set some thing at .018 with the tip and check to see that the .020 will not slide through. A check that you didn't set it too loose.

The .018 and the 020 is for setting the gap @.019. you set the gap @.018 so the gauge goes in easly, then try the .020. It won' go in. If you are between . 018 - .020 you ARE @ .019!

Need to get me a set like that. Sure would come in handy!

Now for those who think about such things, how is something like that made??? How do you hold something .002" thick and grind it down to .001 without burning or warping or tearing it?

It eliminates beginners errors, and takes tbe FEEL out of feeler gauges. You can take two feeler gauges and do the same thing,

I wonder if a magnetic table like used on a surface grinder would work? We had one in the paper mill and if everything was clean and flat it really worked well. I have used a lot of feeler gauges, but never seen one like that, it would be handy! Mostly what we used feeler gauges for was setting the internal clearance on spherical roller bearings, and it might not work so good for that. I have a set about 10 inches long that I used for big bearings!
 
Go-NoGO gauges work nice for setting valves on engines, bought a set years ago and they saved me time as opposed to checking the drag on a gauge.

Some of my feeler gauges. The one on the left I used on easy to access valves, nearly wiped the markings off the left one. I used the 12 inchers for cylinder clearance on DD engines,

The reason for the two setting is so you set the clearance in between the two. .018 loose, .020 won't go. You are @.019!

The only way to do it better is with a dial indicator, time consuming, and not necessary,

I was a die maker, Russ. I've tried grinding real thin pieces, just doesn't work. Magnetic chucks require some thickness to get enough holding force and strip that thin will heat up instantly and buckle under the wheel. There is special equipment to grind like that.
 

As others have posted they are go, no-go gauges. My first new car was a Mustang with the 289 , 271 HP engine. It had solid lifters and the valves were set with the engine hot and running. The go no-go gauge method was handy for that. The gauge was used in my right hand with my left hand used to adjust the nut on the rocker arm mounting stud. When setting valve clearance cold, ignition points etc., I typically use two individual gauges. The clearance desired is always the value between the two gauges.
