Fence Controller Weak

Hi:

Our fence controller has gone from delivering a strong shock to a very weak shock. Testing was done at the controller so no wires involved. Is there some component inside which can be replaced to restore the unit to delivering a strong shock? If yes, where can from?

Unit is a CO-OP Scorpion Model HSM

Repair is questionable. Some can be repaired and some are throw aways. I have a neighbor that builds and repairs fencers. I only know if they work or not.

The co op likely had a company make a fencer for them under the name Scorpion. Ive never heard of that brand and cant find anything online. Might check with the co op, a lot of times theyll send it for you to the company for repair when its their house brand. Any chance theres corrosion somewhere that simple to clean off?

I assume that you have checked your ground rods? Try pouring a little water on them and see if that helps. I know of someone that repairs them. Where are you located?

xactly! I repair some brands & others are throw-away. If repair parts are not available then throw-away. Some of the throw-aways are almost impossible to open up, where as the good , repairable units can be opened by removing a few screws.

Have you went around and checked the fence line? Could be something simple like a weed, branch or the fence wire itself touching the ground.

You are correct after looking closer I see that J C Hallman MFG was the company that produced it for Co-Op. So far I have not found them on the net.

I have disconnected the unit from the wires. The output from the unit is weak. I can hold both posts and not jump.

The unit has screws to take apart. Now the question is what am looking inside.

till pulsing means that most of the circuitry is working. That leaves you with the main components of transformer & capacitor. Be very careful with those things, because most everything inside can be hot, as in floating at line voltage. You can measure across capacitor and determine if you have voltage between pulses of around 170 volts DC. Some are as high as 400v DC. Most that have a weak output have a bad capacitor or transformer. Caps are easy to get & substitute in to verify a fix, but transformers are more difficult & for some fence chargers are simply not sold by the manufacturer.

I have been putting a purchase date on controllers and find they get weaker with age. I would be nice to know it they are repairable.

I've tore into a few of them. Newer ones have printed circuit boards and just about need the whole new board to fix it.

I have an old 120 volt supercharger I'd like to fix. They put out the juice and will burn weeds unlike the new ones that are rated in joules output.

Back in the day Radio Shack used to carry any electrical part you could think of. Now if you want a new capacitor or transformer then you have to look online and those big ones can get expensive.

is is still pulsing, so it isn't going to be control board. As I already said, look toward cap or transformer.
