Well, I got the 40 home and pulled the pan to see if I could see why there was very little oil pressure, especially since I was told on purchase last fall that it had about 3 hours on an overhaul. I found about an 1/8" of black crud in the pan, so I figured it must have been a rough 3 hours!! :^) Anyway, the bearings looked good so I pulled the oil pump apart and it showed a good bit of wear. The pump housing is nice and I've got the new parts back in and I'm going to put the pan on tomorrow. Here's hoping......

Sounds like you have you work cut out for you.
Looks like either the oil was never changed or the old owner was using non-detergent oil.

The engine runs like a top but I haven't run it enough to find out if it uses oil but I don't think it does. We'll see tomorrow.

I would pull the valve cover and see if a sludge problem is there also. Since you have the pan off now is a good time to clean the top of the head and flush the oil return holes.

Ah, that's a thought all right. I really hate to pull the gas tank and all my newly painted tin off again. I got one scratch on the hood from the first go round!!! But unfortunately, you're right.

After you take off the valve cover and flush the head, put a new oil filter and oil in it. Run it an hour or so,and change the oil and filter again. Maybe use a moter flush and run it what the manufactor says on the can. Who knows what crud is in the motor. The oil and filter is a lot cheaper than a another overhaul.

Well since it is alredy scratched the second one won"t hurt as bad. LOL
