Howdy,
I have been getting my TO 20 back together finally and have it running well. I can shift from 1st to 4th, but it won't go into Reverse? Does any one have any ideas why and how to fix it?

I am a new shade tree mechanic.

Thanks,
MP

I think reverse is on its own shift rail. Could just be rusted up inside the tranny. It doesn't look like a big deal to unbolt and lift the cover and take a look. Will it shift in if you work the clutch in and out. Sometimes the gears need to move just a bit to slide together. steve

Unbolt and lift the Transmission cover, and take a look. And yes, I've had two of those Tractors, that had a BENT second GEAR shifting FORK. It would be a great opportunity to check all shifting forks.

Thank you for the info, it finally shifted into gear after going through all the gears. It had sat for a long time from the person I got it from. There was a lot of rust flakes under the shift arm boot after moving it around.

Even if it shifts I would recommend removing the shift cover anyway. When setting the lubricants that are slung up under the cover during normal operation loose their ability to protect the parts in vapor space above the oil level. Then the humidity that passes through the space during nature’s warming and cooling cycles rust the exposed surfaces. Unless this is cleaned off it will continue to fall into the gears etc. which is far from ideal.

Tim, in some cases you have time to write fairly lengthy replies with tons of good information. Yet in this case you appear to not be able to take the time read the replies in this fairly short thread. If you look at reply #4 he says he got the transmission to shift, so no need for him to seek more replies in another forum. It is probably good information for him if he has the need to post about his tractor in the future.
