Finger adjustment 420W

I have just put in a new PTO and traction clutch disk in a 420W with live PTO. I am having difficulty getting the fingers to adjust to 2 21/32". I am about 1/4" below spec when the finger adjusting bolts bottom out ( coils springs are fully compressed). Both discs are from A&I. I read in another post that the PTO disk lining is now thicker than original (thickness is 0.325"). Is there a different finger height to compensate for this? I have a tech manual and have followed the procedure. The tractor is back together and I have 2" of pedal free travel with the cam adjustment max"d out. The traction clutch now grinds when shifting into gear and the PTO will not stop. Can anyone shed some light on this problem? Thanks.

Dang Gary, mine went together like a glove a few years back.

Bad break, I must have had the oldies since I did not put new disks in.

good luck on that beast.

It's normal for the pto not to stop on it's own, drag will keep it turning, but if hooked to something it should stop.I use an adjusting tool to set the fingers. Everyone makes those disc a little different,so the original measurements might not work.

Is the manual an IT or JD manual?
Clutch plates dragging or pilot bearing problems?
Using the JD adjustment tool or "just measuring"?

I borrowed it from a JD dealer then made my own.
They use the same type of tool for 3020-4020 clutches,it's just smaller. It sets the fingers the right height no matter who's clutch plate your using.

Just checked the specs. on the 9" pto clutch disk to the original OEM JD disk and it is bang on. Just to clarrify there are 2 belvil springs in the clutch. The 1st belvil spring sits ontop on the 11" pressure plate so the Convex side faces up? (Smaller diameter to the top) and the 2nd belvil spring that goes on 9" pressure plate is concave side up? ( largest diameter to the top). The book talks about red lines on the belvil springs but mine have red lines on both sides. When attaching the pressure plate assembly to the flywheel the 6 bolts are a little short and I have to apply pressure to the clutch assembly to get the bolts started. Does the techmanual have concave and convex mixed up at any point? Should both belvil springs face the same direction? Spring orientation seems like the only thing that could throw the finger adjustment out at this time.

I am using the orignial John Deere tech manual, the finger adjusting guage, and the clutch alignment tool. The pilot bearing is new and the tractor slid together nicely. The clutch and PTO disk are dragging but the PTO can be stopped by hand with it disengaged and the clutch just lightly grinds when going into gear. The major thing I notice is the lack of pressure req'd to depress the clutch pedal and that it is almost 3/4 of the way to the floor before the throwout bearing makes contact with the fingers. The adjusting cam has been adjusted to its limit.

Sounds 100% normal and you did everything correct for a 420/430/435/440.
The heavy trans oil will turbine the pto gears into slow rotation.
