Front cylinder is #1.

Was going to accuse you of being one of those green left
or right guys and poke at you how confusing it gets when
you add two more to make 4. But according to your past
post you seem to have a interest in the other shade of
green. Same deal as those green ones as far as cylinder
numbering. Get it running and stick your finger in the fan
and when you jerk back you will probably get shocked by
number one spark plug since it is the closest. Then you will
always remember. Just joshing you a bit, hope you can get
it purring for you soon!

Officially the cylinders are numbered front to back, but at least on a 4-cylinder you can time it with the rear cylinder as #1 and it will run exactly the same. I have come across more than one 4-cylinder IH tractor with the engine timed on the rear cylinder.

Mind, you have to do everything the same, cylinder on compression stroke, reset the distributor so the rotor is pointing at #1 post on the cap. It's not like you can just switch the plug wires around and have it run the same.

I'll add something that you didn't ask about... if it hasn't ran in a long time, remove the oil filter and use an oil can and squirt oil in the hole that is near the top of the filter housing. This will make sure the oil pump has oil in it and will start pumping on startup. The oil pump is mounted on the back of the engine and can loose prime over time. That happened to a Cub I bought and resulted in an engine tear down that was completely unexpected. Lost my butt on that little tractor because of it.
