First 4000 I think?

So hi guys this is actually my second ford
I have a running 9n with finish mower I love it
Ok so just picked this up trying to identify it. Any help would be much appreciated

Looks like a 4000HD industrial, to me.
'62-'64. You can check for a serial and
model number just above and to the rear
of the starter, but battery acid has
often ruined those numbers on the early
diesels.

I own a 1963 ford 4140 HD Industrial tractor backhoe loader that I am restoring. I am rebuilding engine now out of tractor.

The model and serial number are stamped on the frame. If you stand looking over the starter and look down, it is stamped there on the frame to the right. I had to remove a lot of grime to see it.

My serial number is book ended with two diamonds.

Could be... but the 1801 was red and buff,
and had cable steering, right? I see a
drag link, and it doesn't look like it was
repainted.

Looks to be a HD4000 4140 at first glance. However, it could be a 4040 or 1801 that someone change over the steering when the cable was giving them grief. If the numbers on the transmission pad don't clear it up, there are date codes all over the tractor to help you pin down the year the tractor was made and that will get you close enough to be able to get the right parts for it. For example, some of them had a date code on the top of the radiator.
