Hi! I have a Farmall 656 gas that is stock it has new sleeves and pistons, runs real nice. I have a petronix electronic ignition kit on it. It has 16.9X38 23 degree Goodyear tires with about half the tread left. I pulled it the first time this week it came in fouth place (240 feet) the winner pulled about 275 feet. I had good traction, the front end never came up, but I ran out of power. I have 240 pounds of weight on the front bracket I pulled in second gear started in high range pulled the TA about half way thru the pull. I am looking for suggestions as to how I can increase the power without tearing the engine down. Would bigger jets and venturi in the carb help? Would pulling in first gear be better? Thanks.

You ran out of power because you were in 2nd gear! Were you pulling a transfer sled or dead weight? Stock drawbar or custom built hitch? What are the rules where you pulled? We had a gas 656 on our dairy farm for years, gone now. The Farmall 656 is similar in size and power to my Oliver 1600 that I pull now. I ALWAYS pull in first gear and my Oliver"s first gear is a bit slower than your 656. What was the weight class you pulled in? Need more info to give accurate advice, I"ve been pulling tractors since 1980. Don

It was a transfer sled pull, 7000 pound class. I used a custom hitch 19.5" high as far forward as I could get it. It is a farm stock class 6MPH speed limit. Stock RPM'S and stock appearing engine.

Just gear her down and pull.
First three factors to look after first before souping the engine is traction, traction & traction.

If you ran out of power you obviosly dont need to worry about weight tires or traction FOR NOW.Dyno tune to the most power including valve lash and follow others advice TRY LOW GEAR.

leave the weight on, if your front comes up, you lose ypur hitch highth. Put it in 1st gear and you will be much happier, and might win... good luck and have fun
