Fitting DC engine into CC bell housing

I replaced the original CC engine 45yrs ago. I finally blew a head gasket while plowing with it, and having never had a head gasket blow, thought I could drive it back to the house 100ft away. Didnt make it 20ft when I bent a connecting rod and a piston seized up. . I recently bought another DC engine. Im wanting to find out here, if, a DC toothed gear can be inserted into a CC Bell housing. I was told back when I first put a DC engine in the CC, that I could NOT put a toothed gear attached to the flywheel into a CC Bell housing. Is that right? I removed the piston and I didnt see any damage to the sleeve. I will give away for free anyone who wants it after I replace it with the new one.

I am no help here but in the past year I did some posts and asked questions about electric start on CC. They should be on here.
