Fixed leaky seal!

All. I split the tractor with no problem at
all. I can't believe how easy it was. I'm
glad I took it on. To a done who followed
the saga the pilot bearing, throw out
bearing and everything else was replaced
but the input seal wasn't. Anyway I got it
fixed in a matter of a few hours tonight.
Over the last week the 9N got a new wiring
harness, tranny oil change, spark plugs,
motor oil change, tranny seal, drain plug,
thermostat and temp gauge, plus other
little goodies. She should be good for a
little bit. I did figure out why I don't
have the dipstick in my tractor. I have the
hole by the gear shift but no hole in the
tranny case for the dipstick to go through.
So I will use the bottom hole of the
inspection plate to judge oillevel. I also
replaced the oil in the rear end to make
sure that it's all correct.

Good for you! It looks like you got the good out of that seal. I see that you rolled the back. Much better than trying to roll the front.

Yeah! It took a bit to get the shaft
realigned but those front wheels were
heading different directions and I knew it
wouldn't line up if we moved the front.

[i:ac372f9009]"I see that is an early 9N - double rib fenders and no transmission dip stick."[/i:ac372f9009]

just so i understand this - early 9s had no dipstick anywhere in the common sump? just a blank right side inspection cover?

My tractor has a place for the dispstick in
the top of the transmission cover but it's
not drilled out through the case to allow
the dispstick to get to the oil.

ok, i had to dig up the web archive's copy of the ford tractor ID page:

https://web.archive.org/web/20160410002816/http://www.oldfordtractors.com:80/idhistory.htm

i wasn't familiar with the placement of a dipstick on the trans cover. i am now :) mine is in the middle of the right side inspection cover of the next section back.

do u know your serial number? as per that page:

[i:14040d1b2d]"This tractor also has the transmission oil level dipstick in front of the fill plug. The first few thousand tractors had only a plug in the right side of the transmission to check the level."[/i:14040d1b2d]

Glad you got it fixed.
Yes, there are ways to judge the year other than serial number.
And the serial isn't always reliable as the engines can be swapped.
Check out John Smith's ID page now located [b:42a5e6880b]here.[/b:42a5e6880b]
Freeze plugs, casting dates, et al.
Those fenders, to a collector, may be worth quite a bit.
The top trans cover too. Where is your starter push button?
