float control for rear grader blade atteachment

can anyone explain to me what the float control on my 1956 ford 800 series model 850 does and how do i use it? I'm new to this game and this tractor and the seller mentioned it was a nice option if I knew how to use it. unfortunatelly, he didnt and couldnt explain it.

hi new guy! The flow control slows down the reaction time of the 3
point. For example, if grading with a box blade, when position
lever is moved, arms will move with the speed of the setting on
flow control valve. faster /slower. hope this helps! Dave

He likely was refering to the famed postion/draft control lever which is under the seat on the cast iron under your right thigh?

It is designed for plowing & other heavy pull things you do with the 3pt. It uses the big spring on the upper link to keep the pull on the tractor about even by raising or lowering the 3pt arms if the pull gets harder or easier. Makes plowing dirt easier.

Some few have gotten it to work with a blade, but for most it is worthless for a blade or other light-draft implements.

I would suggest leaving the lever in 'Position' mode unless you have a 3pt plow. Getting an operators manual for your tractor is real cheap, real easy, & answers a lot of questions on your machine, instead of flopping levers around randomly to see what they do. Operation of the Position/Draft lever is explained there, better than i could do here.


Float is actually the way 90% of all 3pt hitchs work, it means the arms are free to come up, or float. There is no down pressure. Not a 'feature' of the tractor, just normal operation.

on my 574 ih the lever to raise or lower implements controled by a remote cylinder will allow the implement to float by push the lever all the way down. same thing on some back hoe front buckets. locking the lever all the way down with just hand pressure will allow the bucket to just skim along the top of the ground and not dig in.

Whenever you are grading anything you should always be carrying some material with you, no matter if it's a drag box or a front blade.
Makes it a lot easier to hold grade.

Guess as I reread the question, he mighta been refering to a remote hyd line. I was thinking 3pt when I wrote, before thinking.

On the remote, the float postion would be a 4th position (Up, down, off, and float) where float simpley allows the fluid to flow however it wanted - the cylinder will float to any position it wishes. No force on it from the oil. Handy for allowing single-acting cylinders to retract.
