Flushing a crankcase

I just flushed the crankcase of my 60 with diesel fuel in a weed sprayer. I removed the crankcase cover and cleaned everything out. The crankcase is very clean. I flushed everything out the drain hole. In the process, did I loosen enough grit inside the pickup screen to circulate it through the oil lines into the main and rod bearings? I plan to install a new filter and fresh oil. Removing the oil lines to remove the pump for more cleaning look like a nightmare. I am not double jointed.

The new filter should catch any thing washed from the sump. The direction of flow is sump to filter screen to pump, through the filter canister, to the bearings. If you really want to do a through job and you suspect that there is lingering deposits in the lines and block and head area, install a new filter, fill the crankcase with diesel fuel and run it fast enough to carry at least "low" oil pressure for a few minutes. Does a great job, recommended in the manual, and it only costs a second filter to be sure that you don't let a lot of small particles flow out into the system. I generally flush with the old element in place, then drain and replace.

yep. then after that just use detergent oil, a modern development, & no need to flush anymore. keeps all clean as designed. back in the 40's & 50's oil left a lot to be desired in the detergent arena.

Frank, you might want to be careful flushing the crankcase with an old element in place. I have gotten tractors in that contained water in the crankcase and the oil filter was almost completely dissolved. Just a head's up. Mike

I always remove the element and check it first. Only do that if it is just an oily element. If it is too dirty and wet, I rinse the inside out with a pneumatic wand and diesel fuel, then install a fresh filter for the flushing.
