Flywheel on 1945 model A

A few weeks ago I removed the flywheel to clean and paint the back side. Before I removed it I noticed that the flywheel was sticking out past the end of the crank about 1/2 inch with plans to mount it back in a flush position. I put it back on yesterday and the flywheel still sticks past the end of the crank about 3/16 of an inch. I did not use any external force because I cleaned all the splines and there is not any tension on the 2 flywheel bolts that would provide any resistance to it sliding further in on the crank. Any suggestions as to what I should do would be helpful. Thanks.

Is the drive pin for the oil slinger engaged in the small notch? That would keep it from going all the way on.

Mark, I forgot to mention it is a hand start. Also,I marked the flywheel position on the crank before removal and I know it was re-installed in the exact same position. When we put the flywheel back on yesterday my brother and I talked about the key/pin in the flywheel and if it needed to slide into the slot at the base of the crank where it exits the housing. I think this is what you are referencing as it appears to be a solid ring except for a small gap in one place. I can say for sure it was not engaged before removal. Thanks for your help.....will check it out. Buck

You can turn that oil slinger to align with the flywheel. It doesn't need to be timed. Now would be a good time to install a new crankshaft oil seal that fits in that oil slinger. Part# D2124R

Mark, I have another question. When we removed the flywheel one of the splines on the end of the crank had what appeared to be a little set screw. We didn't do anything to it, but I was wondering what purpose does it serve? It sticks up above the spline about 1/8 of an inch.

a service manual would help you get the flywheel right & also help you find the seat ,steering wheel & clutch

It helps you to put the flywheel back on the correct spline. You'll notice the flywheel has a deeper spline.
