Follow-up , 9n converted solenoid problem

Hello, I just wanted to follow up with it issues of a solenoid problem I had yesterday. With all of your help I had finally decided to take off the new solenoid and put it on a meter. However I ended up droping it and cracked the housing open to discover the larger post was turned and was contacting the other leads. So off to TSC to get another new solenoid.... installed like it should and still no go. I just tested it this morning on the tractor. I removed the two smaller wires and just left the two main post connected. And YES I am getting power to the main post but through the solenoid and all the wat to the starter. Now here is my new problem - This 9n is Neg gounded with power to the 12 volts to the starter I should be turning over or is the starter now deceased? Is it possible to get bad solenoids like this? Should I even try another solenoid? Any Suggestions. Thanks Dale now under 6 inches of snow.

Are you saying, 1)nothing connected to either/both small solenoid terminals, 2)batt+ to one big solenoid terminal, 3)starter motor to other big solenoid terminal, AND 4)you ARE getting 12v to starter motor?

Dale, what type of solenoid do you have a 2 large post and 2 small post? Not the correct one for a 9N,but can be made to work. What kind of ignition switch do you have? What kind of starter button do you have?

Use a jumper cable connected to the 2 large posts or short them together with plier handles and if your starter don't turn it is open inside. Maybe stuck brushes - rap it with a hammer. If it turns after the rap, you need to replace the brushes in your starter. If it doesn't it is time to rebuild the starter or buy a new one.

Yes if your getting power through the solenoid with both small wires unhooked from it and it makes your starter run then the new solenoid is stuck on and not good.Try tapping it with something small to see if you you can un stick it.

Sure sounds like a bad solenoid. Starter should be running though. How did you determine that you have voltage to both large terminals of solenoid? If starter not running, just as a starter motor test, short directly across the two big terminals of the solenoid with a large cable, battery jumper cable or a pair of pliers, screwdriver(s) that you are not too proud of, just to see if starter turns. Gears in neutral, of course!
