Thanks, all for your suggestions. Ran the wires, still couldn't find the problem. Had the altenator tested, and there were some problems so I'm installing that, but since the starter didn't turn when I jumped it, I pulled the starter and found the bendix stayed engaged. Tried spinning it in both directions (old fan belt on a Shopsmith spinning at Jointer setting --fairly quick) and it would not retract. Does that mean the bendix is bad, or is there something else I can try?

Thanks

Every time the starter turns the engine over and the engine doesn't start the bendix stays engaged, so what you describe is normal. The bendix will free wheel in one direction and turn the armature in the other. If you must have it retracted the free wheel direction is the way to go. A fast bench grinder with a wire wheel will do the trick sometimes.

I have tried many of the trick people say to get the bendex back in place and have yet to have any of them work. Have one right now that I tried that on a week or so ago and it was a no go so I left it as is since it is a spare any how

Put it in as is and if/when the engine starts it will jump back to where it need to be so no big problem other then being a tad harder to install the starter

Thanks! I was assuming I needed a new Bendix -- you guys saved me $50! Still can't get a start, though. When I reassembled everything, the voltage drops immediately when I turn the key, then builds up VERY SLOWLY when I turn the key off. The voltage drop does not occur when I disconnect the wire to the top of the coil. Is the system telling me the coil is bad, or am I misreading things (again).

Cheers

o one can answer that question without knowing WHERE you are measuring?????

Nothing you do should drop voltage below 4.5 or 9 volts on a good fully charged 6 or 12 volt battery. If just turning the key to on, is dropping voltage at the battery, you need to have your battery checked and make sure connections are shiny clean. Any signs of heat on the connections means they be bad. Good luck, Mike
