Last week I posted on my 8N not turning over I did everything suggested.I deplaced the soleniod and resister.Still nothing. So I installed a new thumb Starter by passing the original setup.I wired from the battery to button to soleniod small post. Now the soleniod makes a noise when pressed but the starter still will not turn. I can still jump it.
What now?

" Now the soleniod makes a noise"

The solenoid is making a noise because of low voltage. That is likely caused by:

1. A weak battery (charge it & check it per tip # 49))
2. Dirty grounds/connections (remove the cables & clean the connections)
3. Bad cables or incorrect sized cables (replace them - see tip # 41)
4. Bad ground between the starter & the block. (pull the starter away from the block & clean the mating area - see tip # 36)

Joe.......you write......"I wired from the battery to button to soleniod small post".......you do know the solenoid is GROUND operated by the BIG THUMB switch, don't you??? That is OPPOSITE of how you have described yer re-wiring. I'm surprized yer solenoid even buzzes. Surprizingly enuff, the "infamous ballast resistor" has 'nuttin' to do with the solenoid. .......respectfully, Dell

Dell I replaced the resistor because when I put a test light on it the existing side was barely lit. I was told I needed to put power to the small post on the soleniod. In fact I put a wire from the power side of the soleniod to the small post and it turned over. The battery was charged.

Joe.......you write......."I replaced the resistor because when I put a test light on it the existing side was barely lit"......would it surprize you to learn most test lites are 12-volts and 6-volts just make a dim test lite???

You write......."I put a wire from the power side of the soleniod to the small post and it turned over".......sounds like you gott the solenoid mounted bassackwards. The little middle post should point towards the engine where it is hard to gitt too. It will then be electrically HOT to be grounded by the BIG TRANNY thumb switch to operated. .......respectfully, Dell

Dell I have the soleniod installed correct. My confusion is why it turns over when I jump it?

Joe,

You said your battery was charged. Do you mean tested or simply charged overnight? If the latter, I would take it to Autozone or some such place and let them check it. From what you describe, it sounds like a weak battery to me.

G6 the battery has plenity of power because again I can not jump it with another battery but hot wirer it. I can take a battery cable touch the power side of the soleniod and ground it and it turns over fine.

Joe,

Did I read you right when you said you hot wire the circuit bypassing the ignition switch? I am a bit confused as to what you did.

Secondly, does the starter spin like it should when you ground the wire that goes to the starter button on the frame? Or is the OEM style starter button now bypassed with some other style of starter switch?

Just need a bit of clarity.

Joe.......us guessers are only as good as how the guesseee describes. From yer last protestation, REPLACE yer 3-terminal solenoid AGAIN, NO ARGUE!!! Even NEW solenoids can be BAD outta the box. .......respectfully, Dell the guesser

G6 I hot wire this by using a battery cable touching one end on the power side (right) and grounding it to the nut ontop of the starter. This nut is from the bracket which is attatched to the left post of the soleniod. When I do this the starter spins.
