Tim I am working on a 5425 cab tractor that the tilt steering wheel will not lock on it. I assume the lock cylinder is bad and there is a puddle of oil beneath it. Can I just change the cylinder and if I can how does the bottom pin come out. It appears to be a press fit. The top of the cylinder is held by 2 allen bolts.
Thanks for all your help

Drive pin out with punch. Don't force new cylinder in or out. Look at old cylinder and set new cylinder rod the same. I always use duct tape to hold steering wheel up. Tape it to windshield is what I do.

Just replaced the tilt cylinder on a 5425 cab tractor I purhased a few mounths ago It is an aggravating job!

My advice is to drive the pin out (about half way) from the bottom cylinder bracket. Have a helper use a piece of bar stock and a socket as braces for the hammering.

DO NOT attempt to remove the cap screws from the top bracket. Use a FLARE wrench to go around the shaft and then use the wrench to unscrew the nut from the top of the cylinder.

Remove the cylinder (you may have to drive the pin at the bottom out a bit further to remove).

My new cylinder was Deere part number AL222225 ($102 in August 2022).

My email should be open if you have any questions.

Good Luck - gwece

I made a tool consisting of two ''U-shaped'' spacers welded to a backing that straddle the lower end of the cylinder and keep the two outer press-fit areas lined up as the pin is knocked out, so as not to deform the bracket and pinch the pin.

I wish I had a photo of it in action, it works well.
