Ford 2000 ingition switch

The ignition switch on my Ford 2000 has four positions: off - run - ??? - start. After putting in a new voltage regulator I notice in the third position (???) the battery light stays on. Is this proper? I suspect the battery was a little low and that maybe this means it is charging. Does that third position (???) create the heavy charge like a number of my tractors do with the light switch?

You replaced the reg. The light is on so that means it's not charging at all. You will need to re-polarize the generator. IF you search in the archinves on the Ford board there will be any number of posts there where Soundguy describes how to do this in detail. He does more of it that me, so he'd know.
I install alternators to solve electrical problems on those tractors.... so I can't tell you off the top of my head the exact wires to jump to polarize it.
If that doesn't solve the problem then there may be problems with the generator or even a defective regulator. Assuming this is a 3 cylinder tractor with the Lucas electrics, bad out of the box wouldn't surprise me... but polarize it FIRST before condemning anything.
