Ford 2000 vs 3000

I'm just trying to figure out how Ford gets 9 more hp out of the same engine? They have the same bore/stroke, compression ratio, etc. What is done to make the additional horsepower? The 2000 is rated for 2000 rpm and the 3000 for 2100, which wouldn't seem to account for that much more ponies.

They weren't the same engine as best I recall... The 2000 has a 158 cid. The 3000 has a 175 cid. Just the same... to your original question... getting more power is easy. Install larger injectors and turn the pump settings higher. It's very easy. Lots of modern electronic engines such as those in heavy trucks could have power ratings all the way from 300 hp to 450 hp with no change in the engine internals at all. It's as simple as changing the settings in the computer program that alters the run time for the injectors....

You both are correct.
The 2000 and 3000 Gassers were both 158 CID.
Aside from spinning the 3000 engine a bit faster I've always assumed they may have gained the extra HP with carb jetting.
The 2000, 3000 Diesels were 158 and 175 CID respectively so that would explain the extra ponies.

You can do that on diesel, but what did they do on the gas engine?

Correct... The 3000 carb is rejetted. Otherwise I believe it's the same carb. Functionally all of those engines use the same heads and cam profiles so their breathing efficiency should be roughly the same. I'd expect that in practice the carb has more capacity than is needed relative to any of those engine sizes... so really it's just a matter of opening the butterfly more and adjusting jet size relative to airflow and pressure maps so that the mixture remains correct. The extra cubes on the 3000 would just make it a bit easier and more consistent to draw more air into the engine.

Sorry, I should have said this is a gas engine. I just bought a 1972 Ford 2000, which appears to be nearly the same as the 3000 except for the badge and the HP numbers. If I can rejet the carb on the 2000 to gain some power, I may do that. The 2000 may be all I need though, so I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. It will be primarily used to work food plots for deer, brush hog to keep weeds down on the rest of the place and some general work with the loader. The only time power may be an issue is when using the disc.

I wouldn't worry about it.
I've had a couple of 2000s and a few 3000/3600s.
Unless you have the tractor fully ballasted and are really working it on a plow or disc or you have a brush mower on it and are working it for all she's worth you will never notice the difference in HP from one to another.
They are great small tractors.
