Ford 2600 or 3000?

Considering trading my '65 3000 for a 2600 with P/S.
Are there any downfalls going to a newer 2600? It's gonna cost me, as it is not an even trade. The cash price for the 2600 is going to be ~$4600.00. An offer for my 3000 has nor been made, as the seller has not seen it yet.

Thank you, FOT

The 2600 has improved hydraulics, but about 8 less horsepower than a 3000. If you need the horsepower then stay with the 3000. If you would like the power steering and improved hydraulics and don't need the extra horsepower then go with the 2600.

The two series share about 90% of the same parts so as Sean said, your loosing hp, and buying slightly better hydraulics and steering. You can add aftermarket power assist to the 3000 for around $500 to 600 but will only be power assist. The x600 series improved on that power assist just a bit more. And yes the x600 did go to alternator instead of generator, so that can only be jump started instead of pull started or jump started,,, when battery is dead. The 8 speed is ultra critical as to making a good tractor with a live pto, so that would make a huge difference if the 3000 did not have that over the 2600 trade. But otherwise I need the 30% more hp that the 3000 has, with its 8 speed and live pto, so thats the way I would go. If you dont ever plow or run a bigger 6 ft shredder...

Why is that? I assume that the alternator will not produce the necessary voltage for a spark at low rpms when pull starting, but I wouldn't think that would be true for x600 tractors with a diesel engine, correct?

They are both diesel. I don't plow and my shredder is 5'.
I like the p/s, as the 3000 is extremely hard to steer, and I put in all new parts. (not p/s)

I hope I don t get to drive an old ford like mine with power steering. It would make me want to get mine working!!

I'm going to low ball you on the price you
get for the 3000 and say you get $3K for
it. So you'd be into the 2600 for $1600 out
of pocket.
If you don't need the extra HP the 3000 has
and depending on the condition of the 2
tractors I would make that trade.
To me having power steering is worth a
Grand by itself.
Keep the best wheels/tires of the two and
the best lights, steering wheel, fenders, 3
point parts, etc.
