my georgia neighbor wants to sell his 1979 Ford 2600 diesel, 8 forward 2 reverse with forklift, boxscrape and hayrake(?) all in good working condition for $6,000. the only info i could find was that a 1981 originally sold for $6,436. two people told me it was about a $2500 to $3,000 tractor not including the implements. what is a fair price for this tractor with and without the implements?

Not much to go on for giving you a value.
Got any pictures.
How are the tires, tin, paint, hydraulics, etc, etc on the tractor? Appearance means a lot. Tires can cost a bundle. Hydraulics can be a pain.
Is the tractor gas or diesel? How many hours on the hour meter? Is there any blowby from the engine. Start good? Run good? Clutch good? Probably has live PTO so are BOTH clutches good?
Assuming all the things I have mentioned are good to very good, tractor has been taken care of, impliments are "field ready" $6000 is not out of line for that package in these parts. A bit on the high side of average from a private party but not out of line.

Yes, everything is in good working condition. My neighbor is 90 yrs old and he has been letting me borrow the tractor off and on for 2 yrs and i have helped him out around his place. I have grown quite fond of him and i would like to get the tractor just to maintain the 'bond' between us. At the risk of sounding sentimental, i wouldn't want any other tractor. sigh, i guess i will just have to say goodbye to my friend (the tractor) since he has someone interested and i can't afford any more than $4,000. thanks for the response.

The tractor and attachments for $6000 is a reasonable price. Really reasonable since you have been using the tractor for several years. The attachment are an easy $1000 at the least. That would be $5000 for the tractor. I found seven advertised for an average of $6250, drop the high and low averaged the rest. So a tractor that you KNOW the history on and the attachments for $6000 sound VERY GOOD to me. Now I know what it is like not to have the $6000 so that is a different problem.
I doubt that the tractor will be for sale very long. These utility tractors always have a strong demand.

i have had alot of these tractors, they are great around 40 hp. if it has power steering and live pto, and is diesel. the price is fair at 6000. over all cond, and hrs mean alot. make sure that it is good and tight all over and the three point hitch works right. put the hyd lever in the down position, and with the tractor running lift the lever one inch at a time, lift arms should raise, a litle at a time. then with the tractor off with the arms up. it should not leak off any ! hope this is helpful

If you have much use for a tractor there will come a day that you will kick yourself for not buying it. They are really superb machines and not to be found every day. Maybe he would come down a little if you told him he could still use it any time he needed it.
