Fellers,

I have a friend with a low hour (1500 or so) 2600 that is blowing oil somewhere around the exhaust. This tractor has led a charmed life....having belonged to his father in law whom I also knew well. It has never been used hard. Anyway...I ran into my friend at the local dealership today and they hooked it to the dyno. They wound it up, choked it down with a good load and it never pulled over 25 horses on the PTO. It seems to run fine. They held a piece of cardboard over the exhaust..it isn"t blowing oil from the pipe. BUT, the left side of the engine is covered in black oil. Exactly where it is coming from remains a mystery at this point. I left with my ears ringing..listened to it as long as I could stand it! The engine runs smooth..but the lack of power doesn"t ring well and why the oil is being blown out...I"d like to know. So...now you know all that I do. Any ideas?

I just painted my 2600 and found that the valve cover bolts were loose (leak), small leak around the drive for the tach, oil filter leak, and oil pressure sender unit are all on the left side of the block. If you have Power Steering the pump's on the left too.

Perhaps the oil leak and apparent lack of power are un-related? What are the symptoms of the lack of power? Doesn't so something it used to? Seems slugish? ???

Diesel.

I don"t know whether it does any less than it ever did..so far as pulling power is concerned...I"ve never worked the tractor myself. But 25 on the PTO isn"t much. I don"t know the specs of a 2600..but I"d think it"d be around 32-35 on the PTO.

As for paint..they had this one repainted and it looks like a new tractor in every respect.

I confess, I"m not a Ford fan, but this sure would be a handy machine in the garden and for small jobs. To me, it"s just an updated 2000 and if I recall...the old 8N made around 25 horses on the PTO.

My blue book shows 32.47 PTO HP for the 2600 158 Diesel.
It might just need to work really hard for a bit, to clean it up.
Diesels don't like to be pampered!

Diesel means it could just be slobber on the left side from never getting used hard. Or as John TR says a leaking valve cover.
Dunno why it isn't dynoing better.
2600 was a significant upgrade from the 2000. Actually it's closer to a 3000 but with better hyds. That one would make a Ford Fan out of most anyone. It's a sweetheart little tractor.

UD,

This thing is making a hell of a mess...it's leaking worse than a Detroit! I am sure they'll figure it out by and by...I was just curious of anybody else had ever experienced the same thing.

One Ford tractor I would like to own is a 3930...just a darn nice all around machine. I had a neighbor that bought one new. His dad had a 3910...no comparison between them. That 3930 was heads above the 3910.

I'm not really colorblind when it comes to tractors. I've had more green ones than any....this last one I bought doesn't do anything for me. I am so disgusted with what all of them are selling nowadays....I'd be willing to try any brand. Those new Lamborghini's are a sharp looking machine.

LOL,
Next thing he'll tell us is it's as bad as a Harley...
Either of the 39s are much more tractor than a 2600. Double reduction rear ends, independant pto etc, etc.

UD,

Oh there is no doubt about the 39"s being more toy than the 2600.

Don"t even get me started on Harley"s!

I"ve owned a bunch of tractors, ran a few others. Another deceased neighbor had a 600 that he had overhauled. Ran smooth as butter. Brakes weren"t worth a dime but it was handy in the truck garden.

I own a couple Ford 101 plows and a wheel disc, they"re good old implements. Never a better plow in my estimation.

Either can cause loss of power, both together can have a big effect. Valves ever adjusted? Tight intakes could help it suck oil and be low on power.

Did they check that it obtained the correct high idle when they had it on the dyno? I'm not sure if that tractor is supposed to be at 2000 or 2200 or 2300, or just what the figure is... but I do know that if it's low, you won't get rated power from the engine. I'd check that it's winding to 2300 or better myself, then pull it again... see what it makes.
Other than that, check the filters and valves, then put it on the dyno and run the snot out of it until it drys up it's slobbering.
