Ford 2N 12 volt generator

Hello all,

I am restoring a Ford 2N. I'd like to keep the 12v system in it but I hate the look of the alternator. Ive read that I can have a 6 volt generator converted into a 12v. I understand the 6v generator had issues charging at low rpm. Will the 12 volt have the same charging issues at low rpm? If so is there a way around this?

Also, is there a place where I can buy a premade 12 generator? Is it hard to order the parts and do it myself?

This tractor is probably just going to be a parade tractor- I don't plan on working it.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Thanks,
Nick

I am not sure where but my son ordered a 12 volt alternator made to look like a generator generator. he has it on a 37 ford flathead. A pickup project he is working on. If I recall the first one he ordered was to long and interfered with the carb set up.

Why the half measure?
If you are restoring the tractor then suffer the 6 volts it came with.
If you want 12 volts, get past the sentimental and wire a 10si on it.

If you use a Hitachi 14231 alternator, it looks much better than the big Delco. The Hitachi has a smaller footprint and wires the same as 3-wire Delco.

Another source of generator looking alternators - http://powermastermotorsports.com/catalog.html# -
My local generator shop rewires generators to 12v, I have two on my 900 Ford tractors that are still earning their keep on the farm. Not real cheap, $200 for the last one I think. Complete rebuild tho, bearings etc. Stock look and no problem with charging.
Kinda agree with Ultradog tho, for a parade tractor why not leave it stock and run 6v? I've got a couple of 6v tractors also, they start and run fine, just can't power 12v accessories (pumps and whatnot) with them.

Nice eclipse going on right now, but I'm headed back to bed...

I have (I think) the later 9n-10000C one wire generator with the cut-out can and adjustable third brush. It charges at 10 amps at anything above an idle. So when I run my tractor I just keep the rpm's a little higher. No problem.
