Did any of the old fords have decent brakes? If not which older tractor brand of that era had brakes that you could rely on on? Ty

My 9N will lock and slide the wheels, of course they are properly
adjusted and the axle seals are not leaking. What more could you
ask for?

My 41 9N is same way, Slide wheels, now my 44 2N bought new in May of 44 they were always weak and I have no idea why. And as far as I know never were apart.

Im guessing that most brakes worked on new tractors out of the factory. However we are talking about 70/80 year old tractors that most likely had minimal maintenance in its life time on the farm. I
am also guessing that many tractors of that vintage still have their original factory installed brake pads, shoes, and/or drums. I grew up on tractors with undependable brakes. Now days, the brakes
work on all my tractors, including my vintage tractors.

Ford used the same outboard dry-drum style
brakes on all their under 40 HP tractors from
1939 till well into the 1980s.
They are adequate... IF you keep them
adjusted and the outer axle seals don't leak
- which is a common problem.
But they were never anything to brag about.
If you want an older Ford tractor with really
good brakes you need to go to the 50+ HP
tractors with internal wet disc brakes which
were introduced in 1965.

I have 2 8ns both early 48 one has great brakes it will lock up either side, the other not so much. I replaced both brakes and seals in both tractors and did them both the same as far as I know.
