I just bought an old 2N and it needs some general maintenance work. Is it OK to use Synthetic oil with the motor or will this hurt anything?

If its a new/rebuilt engine yes but if its not I would run to normal oil in it because if you don't it may fall aprts from all the stuff that that new oil would brake loose inside of the engine

I'll have to check and see if this has been rebuilt. I don't think it has but it runs great. Just bought it yesterday and the oil is pretty dark.

Synthetic will be fine, but I would question why?

Synthetic offers three advantages over conventional oil, flowability at low temps, it's ability to carry foreign matter and resistance to thermal breakdown. None of wich I think you're going to need with the engine on a 2N.

Given what went into the engine when it was introduced in 1939 even the cheapest no name brand you can find will still be a vast improvement.

Oil will always be dark. Most old tractors aren"t run hard enough to burn off the impurities. Tolerances in 1942 were"nt as tight as they are now,lot of blowby and other leaks. The filter on an N-Series is a bypass filter so only a small portion of your oil is being filtered at a time anyway.
