Ford 3000 diesel TDC

Is there a notch in the harmonic balancer for Top Dead Center for a ford 3000 diesel tractor? or what would be the best way to find TDC on #1 cylinder? Pull the valve cover and spin the engine over till both rocker arms are loose? Thanks

There isn't any harmonic balancer on those engines.... just a cast pulley.

If you just want to find TDC for adjusting valves... i usually do so by rolling the engine in the direction of rotation and watching valve movement in conjunction with 'feeling' where the most compression is to ascertain where TDC is. If you really need to know, pull #1 injector and insert a clean welding rod down the hole. When it rises no more you have TDC...

The flywheel should also be degreed and visible through the access hole below the starter as well.
