Ford 3000 Fuel Problem - Redux

Ok, got a chance to put my new to me 1968 Ford 3000 gasser to work over the weekend. Yes, that inline 'thing' is a replacement fuel pump. It's a Carter Carotor which you can see here: http://carterfuelsystems.com/fuelpumps/universal_fp.php. Mine looks just like that with the filter and everything.

Well, after it got good and warm bush hogging it would start to die quickly for several revolutions and then kick a bunch of black smoke out of the stack and fire back up and keep going for a few seconds or minutes and do it again. It only did this at higher RPM's but that's where I needed to be to power the bush hog. At medium and slow speeds it would run great and smooth. It would only 'stumble' like that at higher RPM's. Only a couple of times did I have to step on the clutch to keep it from dying all the way.

I don't have a choke cable on it to use in those situations to see if it was rich or lean. I've pulled the line from the tank to the carb (filter and pump) in order to put the choke cable back on. I'm thinking of going back to the stock fuel pump but hear that they are in a touch place to work on. Anyone have any suggestions? I know I need to check all the filters. Haven't done that yet. Anyone have any experience with one of these? I think the number is: 2M04A 430 I can't find any reference to it. I'm open to any and all input. Thanks.

that site did not list the pressure rating on that pump.. but i'd be leary of using a high psi fuel pump. you need something more in the 2-4 psi range.. and those are easilly available. I would even shy away from the 7 psi models.

In the end.. any fuel pump capable of delivering low psi and correct flow will work.. mechanical or electric. the carb can't tell... your call.. i'd be looking up the specs on that one... too much psi will make the float valve leak

Did it stumble and act like it was flooding only while making a turn if so you have a bad float...

If it were the pump it makes no sense it would flood at higher RPM but not at idle are mid RPM...

A good mechanical pump can make 8PSI and all is happy...

Now that you mention it, it did start stumbling when I was turning. For quite a while that's the only time it did it. As it got warmer it started doing it more often. It was the worst when turning or going up an incline.

I'm going to pull the carb this weekend and bring it home to rebuild next week. As it is a 'new to me' tractor I was hoping to avoid this kind of work but it will give me the comfort of resetting the baseline and knowing what's in it when I'm done putting the fuel system back together. Still need to figure out if I'm going back to the stock fuel pump or not. Thanks for the insight. It got me thinking.
