ford 3000 or 2000

guys i need some help. i bought a tractor over the weekend and thought i was getting a ford 3000 but i was told yesterday that its a 2000. this is what i know: the hood lettering reads ford 3000. it was yellow at one time then painted blue. its a 8 speed. diesel. the numbers i found on side read "5C18 on top and under that it reads B950740". that is all i can find on it so far. do you guys know what i have?

A 3000 should have a square rear axle housing,
while most 2000's have a round housing. (some
2000's have the square housing, so this isn't a
foolproof way to determine one from the other)
The numbers you posted look like the serial
(Bxxxxxx would be a Basildon-built unit) and a
partial unit number (missing a A, B, or C at the
end to denote which shift) There should be a 3rd
number - starting with either a 2 or B for a 2000
and a 3 or C for a 3000. Yours would read
something like C1013C.

ok found a few more numbers. D4NN6015F on bottom or motor. D2NN7006A under the shifters on side of housing. checked the first two numbers again and all that is there is 5C18 B950740. if this does not help please tell me where to look to find the correct numbers. also square axles.

Those are casting numbers. You need the stamped
numbers on flat area of the bellhousing, just above
and to the rear of the starter. Can be hard to find
and read due to layers of paint and/or dirt and
grease. They will also be on a foil tag under the
hood (above the battery), IF the tag is still there.

walked out and just checked again and the foil tag is no longer due to battery exploding yesterday. the only two numbers that are stamped to the rear of the started are 5c18 and b950740 with the last number having stars at both ends. any other thoughts or ideas? i was told its a 2000 do to the draft spring being not covered????

The spot where you found the 5c18 and b950740 numbers should have a third number. It may be off of the ground flat spot and more on the rough area that hasn't been ground flat & smooth. If that's the case, it will be harder to find and harder to read than the other 2 numbers, but it should be there.

The *B950740* is defiantly the serial number. Looks
high enough that it should be a '70's model...which
would mean the 5C18 is 1975, March 18, and the
letter for which shift is missing.
I've also heard that the 2000 and 3000 have
different draft springs... but I'm not sure what the
difference is. Maybe Ultradog or Rod will chime in
with the answer.

Should be 3 lines of code like in the first photo.
FordFarmer is correct - the draft spring on a 3000 is covered - 2000 is not. 2000 never had flow control on the right side of the tractor just below the remote valve or cover plate.
By 1973 there really wasn't much of a difference between a 2000 and a 3000. Both had square rear axles - (earlier 2000 had round) both models may or may not have had differential lock.
3000 diesel was 175 CI and 2000 D was 158 CI.
I understand your wanting to know exactly what you have but for all intents and purposes they are the same machine - especially the late ones.

british models can have the model number on the left side of tranny instead of right side.. so check there as well.

since it is a british model, look on the otherside for stamped numbers too..

my tractor does not have the three sets of numbers stamped as in the picture. i will check other side later today and let you know what i find. since the tractor was "sold as" a 3000 and it seems like its a 2000 (due to the draft spring being un covered) will this affect the value of the tractor?

The cover on my 3000 appears to be a casting and is held in place
with 2 bolts on flanges (part of the cover). The threads for the
mounting bolts are at 7 o'clock and 2 o'clock. Might look and see if
you have the threaded holes and if so, possibly the cover was just
left off by a PO during a repair event.

no mounting holes for the cover. still have not found the number i am looking for. but from what i am reading and been told a think i have a 2000. what is the price difference from the 2000s to 3000s?
